Not that hard. Nailed it the first time. Stalled it the second. Of course, I had to use the only vehicle in the entire extended family with a stick, my grandpa’s 1966 Olds 442. I expect my Jalopnik Gold card to arrive in the mail shortly.

Bravo! Good for you picking it up so quickly and in a classic 442!

I’ve never understood. What is Jalopnik Gold?

Or like give Jkm7680 that 442, then yeah that would be cool.

To be fair, it’s about as hooptie of a 442 as you can get. Mechanically it’s sound (although the clutch is on it’s way out, hence why it wasn’t a problem letting me learn on it), but visually it’s a bit iffy. Cracked dash, worn seats, faded paint with splotches of primer and bondo...

Yeah, it’s really not. People let themselves freak out about it, but it’s not a big deal. Hell, my decidedly NON-car-guy husband can drive a stick like he’s a rally driver.

It sounds like a lovely hooptie to me.

I’m still confused. It was posted on April first. And does it work only on Jalopnik or all kinja? And the webcam thing is creepy.

You stalled it because you didn’t follow the correct procedure for such a machine, as follows:

1. Bring revs up & hold at 2500.
2. Dump clutch in one rapid motion.
3. Depress throttle to firewall.
4. America

Hell of a cool car to have your first manual experience in, congratulations! My grandma had a 442 when they were new, I wish it were still in the family.

Also, we’re going to need pics of the car or no Gold member for you.

I figured so. It was posted on April first. And with the tagline thing no one would probably give it away.

Is it a real 442? There’s no way to tell by the vin prior to 68 because the 442 was a trim package before it became a stand alone model line.

I drove so many old carbed manuals that I actually was confused the first time I drove a pretty new car, a BMW 5 series. It was so close and delicate I was like, all the gears are almost in the same place! And its so much more refined and easy to shift I was just flabbergasted. Well try a newish car at some point and feel the difference. My 240Z is a proper tranny for me. I learned on an old chevy pickup.
